Common questions
The first launch is downloading something huge — what is it? The language model weights (~1.3 GB). Buddy Chat runs the language model locally on your device, so the model has to be on your device. The download is one-time; after it completes, the app works fully offline. We recommend doing the download on Wi-Fi.
Why does it take a few seconds before the app starts responding? On first use after launch, the model is loaded into memory and the Metal acceleration is warmed up. Subsequent replies in the same session are much faster.
Can I use a different language model? Not yet. The first version ships with a single curated model. Custom models are a future enhancement.
Does it work without internet? Yes — after the initial model download, Buddy Chat does not need internet. It does not contact any server during normal use.
Does it work in airplane mode / on the subway? Yes. The full speech-recognition, language-model, and speech-synthesis pipeline runs on your iPhone.
Why does the reply sometimes get cut off? Tapping the screen or starting to speak again interrupts the current reply (this is by design — barge-in). If replies are cut off without your input, please contact support with the device model and a description of what happened.
Where are my conversations stored? Locally on your device only. They are not synced to iCloud and they are not sent anywhere. If you delete the app, the conversations are gone.
The download failed / is slow. Network conditions vary. You can pull-to-refresh on the download screen to retry. If it consistently fails, please contact support.
